Copyright and Takedowns
The short versionYour photo, your words. Say so and it comes down.
- Recipes live on people's own devices. The only things we keep for others to see are shared links: pages of a recipe, collection or cook book at heartlesschef.com/r, /c and /b.
- Imported recipes keep their credit and a link to the site they came from.
- If a shared page uses your work without permission, send a notice to our copyright agent below, and we'll take it down.
- If your link was taken down by mistake, you can send a counter-notice.
- Accounts that keep sharing other people's work lose their links.

Sending a takedown notice
If a shared page uses a photo, text or other work you own without permission, your notice needs:
- Your physical or electronic signature. Typing your full name at the end of an email counts.
- The work you own, such as the photo or the writing, and where you published it.
- Each shared link it appears on, for example heartlesschef.com/r/… or /c/… or /b/….
- Your name, mailing address, phone number and email address.
- A statement that you believe in good faith the use isn't authorized by the copyright owner, its agent or the law.
- A statement that the information in your notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you own the copyright or are authorized to act for the owner.
A list of ingredients on its own usually isn't protected by copyright; a photo and the writing around a recipe usually are. Someone who knowingly misrepresents that something infringes can be liable for damages (17 U.S.C. § 512(f)), so if you're not sure, ask a lawyer first.
What happens next
When a notice is complete, we take the page down promptly: the link answers that it was taken down, its photos stop being served, and it can't be shared again. The app tells the person who shared it that the link was taken down. We'll reply to let you know.
If your link was taken down
If you shared a link that was taken down and you believe that was a mistake, or that the work was misidentified, you can send a counter-notice to the same agent. It needs:
- Your physical or electronic signature.
- The link that was taken down.
- A statement, under penalty of perjury, that you believe in good faith it was taken down by mistake or because the work was misidentified.
- Your name, mailing address and phone number.
- A statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the federal district court for your address (or, outside the United States, any judicial district where Catnap Apps LLC may be found), and that you'll accept service of process from the person who sent the notice, or their agent.
We send a copy of a complete counter-notice to the person who sent the notice. Unless they tell us within 10 business days that they've filed a court action to stop the sharing, we bring the link back 10 to 14 business days after we received the counter-notice.
Repeat infringers
When an account's shared links are taken down for copyright again and again, we take down every link that account has shared, and keep taking down any it shares after.
Other problems with a shared page
For anything else wrong with a shared page, such as something unlawful, hateful or meant to harass, use Report this page at the bottom of the page itself, or email support@heartlesschef.com. Our terms of use say what can be shared.
