Questions
What does it cost?
It’s free to download and free to use: your recipes, importing them from websites and other apps, hands-free cooking, timers, groceries, meal plans, joining a household and printing are free, always. Heartless Chef Plus, $1.99 a month or $14.99 a year, makes a household that shares its grocery lists and adds print styles and cook books of any size, with no AI. The robot chef’s AI needs Heartless Chef Pro (everything in Plus, and the chef) or credits, and every new iPhone gets 15 free credits to try him. More in What's free.
Can’t I just ask an AI for a recipe?
You can, and it forgets it. Heartless Chef keeps every recipe you make or find, in collections you can search, ready to cook, plan meals and shop from. Keeping them is free; with Pro, the chef writes you new ones too.
Which devices does it run on?
iPhone and iPad with iOS 18.2 or later, and Macs with Apple silicon. There’s an Apple Watch app too, for your grocery lists, your recipes and the steps while you cook.
Are my recipes private?
Your recipes live on your phone and in your own iCloud, not on our servers. There’s no account to make, no ads and no third-party trackers. What you share with your household or as a link, and what you ask the chef, goes through our server; the privacy policy says exactly what.
Can I bring my recipes with me?
Yes. Paste a link to any recipe website, free. Moving from another recipe app? Export your recipes there and open the file in Heartless Chef, or go to Settings, then Your Library; it reads them on your phone, photos and all, free too. The chef can also read a photo of a recipe card or a page of a cookbook, which uses Pro or credits.
Does the chef really swear?
Only HEARTLESS, and he’s bleeped until you turn Bleep the Swearing off on his card. The other chefs keep it clean. More in The chef's personality.
Does it work without the internet?
Your recipes, cooking mode, timers, the week’s plan and your lists all work offline. Asking the chef, reading a new recipe and syncing with your household need a connection.
What's free, and what costs something
Your recipes and your kitchen are free, always, and every recipe you make with the chef stays yours.

*Joining is free: one member's Plus or Pro covers everyone in a household, so free members share everything it shares. Credits never expire.
Heartless Chef Plus ($1.99 a month or $14.99 a year) shares your kitchen and prints in style, with no AI: making a household to share grocery lists, meal plans and collections (one member's Plus covers everyone in it), the Kitchen Binder, Heirloom and Bold print styles, and cook books of any size. A cook book you make keeps its recipes, and still prints, after Plus ends. Credits work with Plus too, for the chef now and then.
Heartless Chef Pro is everything in Plus, and the robot chef whenever you want. The chef (the AI) runs on computers we pay for every time it thinks, so it needs Pro or credits.
Credits
- 1 credit = 1 recipe, fix or answer. When the chef asks you something first ("spicy or mild?"), that's free.
- Credits never expire.
- New iPhones get 15 free credits to try the chef, once per iPhone.
- With Pro, your credits aren't used: they wait for you, and pay for the chef again if Pro ends.
Restoring purchases
- Credits come back on their own when you reinstall the app or move to a new iPhone signed in to the same Apple Account. Open Settings, then Credits, to check.
- Plus or Pro: open Settings, tap Plus and Pro, then Restore Purchases.
Managing or cancelling Plus or Pro
On your iPhone, open the Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and choose Heartless Chef. You can switch between Plus and Pro, or monthly and yearly, or cancel there. Moving up to Pro starts at once; moving down to Plus starts when your current period ends. Either keeps working until the end of the period you've paid for.
Refunds
Apple handles payments, so refunds go through Apple: visit reportaproblem.apple.com and choose the purchase.
The chef's personality
To change who's cooking with you, open Settings and tap the chef card at the top. Each personality talks its own way, and you can pick his voice there too. HEARTLESS swears, but you hear a beep instead until you turn Bleep the Swearing off on his card, and he checks with you when you do.
Your recipes on a new iPhone
Your recipes, meal plans and grocery lists sync with iCloud. Sign in to the same Apple Account with iCloud turned on and they come back on their own. To keep a copy of your own, open Settings, then Your Library, then Back Up Library.
Sharing with your household
- To share grocery lists, the week's plan and recipe collections, open Settings, then Household & Account. Only the people who share sign in, with Apple or Google.
- To stop sharing, tap Leave Household there. Everyone keeps what's on their phone.
- To delete your household sign-in, tap Delete My Household Account. It takes you out of the household, signs you out on every device and deletes your sign-in from our server.
- To take back a recipe link you shared, open Settings, then Your Library, then Shared Links.
